Going right back to some of the first historical records on dentistry, in 2000 BC the people of Iraq believed that tooth decay was caused by worms. By the year 800 BC an ancient civilization from Italy were carrying out real dental treatments. These included using pieces of precious metal to hold loose teeth in place and constructing false teeth from animal and human teeth. By the time of Hippocrates, he himself was investigating and describing diseases of the mouth. In the first half of the fifteenth century the first textbook on dentistry was published although there was not much in the way of pain relief so a visit to the dentist was still a painful experience. Visiting the dentist brings about feelings of anxiety with some people and a trip to the dentist for them can be a real ordeal. The reasons behind this are usually the fear of the equipment being used, smell or a bad previous experience. Going to the dentist is a must though, regardless of how you feel about it. Of course if you have been looking after your teeth there is no reason why you should need any treatment. On an ordinary check up the dentist will use a small mirror to look into your mouth and that really is about it. We put an awful lot of trust on our dentists and the delicate nature of the work they do makes many people feel anxious. Dentists spend many years studying to get to where they are as the hover over you in the dentist chair. Dentists generally complete a five year degree programmed which is preceded by excellent A level and GCSE exam results. Of the three A levels at least two has to be science topics. Working as a dentist is more than just treating people with problems in their mouth; it is about educating people about the prevention of these problems. Dentists must also get used to working with children. With it costing on average one hundred and seventeen pounds for an adult to have a simple filling in a tooth you can see why it is beneficial for people to have insurance to cover these events. Causes Of Bad Breath
You can get bad breath from a number of different causes. These causes are widely ranged but the most common cause is from the mouth itself, 85-90% of all causes are from the mouth. The scientific name of bad breath is Halitosis and here are seven of the more commen causes:
1. Gum Disease: Gum diesease can be the reason for bad breath, the bad breath comes from the overgrowth of bacteria.
2. Accumulation of Food Debris: This is probably the most common cause for bad breath, the accumulation of food debris gets on or between teeth and coats the tongue. This is anaerobic bacteria from the food particles producing respiratory products, giving off a rotten egg smell. [Read more...]
